Habitat for Humanity Maui closes on two more homes in Lahaina

Lahaina News

WAILUKU - Last week, two families received keys to their new homes as part of Habitat for Humanity Maui's affordable housing project in Lahaina.

The homeowner's friends and family contributed a combined 1,950 sweat equity and volunteer hours on the 864-square-foot home that features two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Both homes were completed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a decrease of volunteers for the project.

Two new homes were recently completed in Habitat for Humanity Maui’s affordable housing project in Lahaina.

"We had less hands onsite due to the restrictions surrounding the stay-at-home order, but our family partners, construction team and staff were dedicated to working extra hard so that both families were able to close on their homes," said Yvonne McClean, community relations director.

As the pandemic continues to impact the community, Habitat for Humanity Maui is dedicated to fulfilling its mission to bring attainable housing for those in need.

Current projects include the Kahoma Residential Subdivision and Keokea-Waiohului Hawaiian Homelands in partnership with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

There are also programs for existing homeowners, such as "A Brush with Kindness," which helps kupuna and disabled homeowners with critical repairs.

"The changes in the recent months have made the need for safe, stable and affordable housing much more urgent. We want the community to know we are here and committed to continue pursuing our mission," McClean said.
