First female Hawaiian falsetto contest postponed

KAPALUA - The Carmen Hulu Lindsey Leo Ha'iha'i Falsetto Contest is being postponed until a later date due to the uncertainty of COVID-19.

The inaugural contest was set to take place at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua's opening night at Celebration of the Arts on Friday, April 10.

On March 13, event chair and cultural advisor of the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Clifford J. Nae'ole posted this message on social media: "After much thought and consideration, we announce the postponement of the 28th Annual Celebration of the Arts. We have made this decision to ensure we are embracing our kuleana as partners of protection for our kupuna, keiki, 'ohana, friends and visitors.

“We are only postponing,” shared Carmen Hulu Lindsey. “The committee and the contestants have worked so hard to prepare for the event, so we will press on with the contest when everything is in the clear.”

"Please rest assured that we will reassess the program as time and scenarios evolve. Mahalo to those who have supported and worked so tirelessly on this event, and we appreciate your understanding that the health and wellbeing of all involved is paramount.

Contestants that have been approved to participate will be invited back once a new contest date is secured.

The Carmen Hulu Lindsey Leo Ha'iha'i Falsetto Contest is sponsored by Festivals of Aloha, Pihana Productions, I-Vibes Productions, Wailau Ryder, Lokahi Pacific and the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
