Maui Festivals of Aloha events begin Sept. 6

WAILUKU - With the theme "E Ho'i Na Wai, E Ho'ike Aloha i ke Ao" (May the waters return, May the love for our world return), 2019 Festivals of Aloha events on Maui begin Sept. 6.

The mission of Festivals of Aloha is to honor Native Hawaiian culture and traditions from generation to generation, as well as share them with visitors and people from the community.

The Wailuku First Friday Festivals of Aloha Kickoff is set for 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept 6. This street party in Wailuku Town will feature crafters, food and entertainment by Kamakakehau Fernandez, Halau O Ka Hanu Lehua and Kumu Hula Kamaka Kukona.

The 18th annual Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Ki‘eki‘e Falsetto Competition will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Sept. 14. Kaulike Pescaia won the 2018 contest.

On Sept. 14-15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Lahaina Banyan Tree Ho'olaule'a will feature Hawaiian music, food, crafters, free keiki activities and exhibits, and hula.

On Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the 18th annual Richard Ho'opi'i Leo Ki'eki'e Falsetto Competition at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will showcase Hawaii's finest amateur male falsetto performers. Contestants belt their most exquisite high-register voices in an art form dating back to a time when Hawaiian women were forbidden to sing publicly. Special surprise guests will perform as well.

And on Sept. 20, Hawaiian cultural practitioners will share their art with music and hula at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center in Kahului from 6 to 8 p.m. Visit www.festivalsofaloha.com for more information.
