Lahaina News

LAHAINA - Jazz Maui will present two free concerts in celebration of Independence Day on Thursday, the Fourth of July, beginning at 5 p.m. The annual "Concert in the Park" featuring the Chop Suey Jazz Orchestra, vocalist Sheryl Renee and the Maui Community Band takes place on the Lahaina Public Library lawn. Fireworks follow the concert at 8 p.m.

The Chop Suey Jazz Orchestra is a 26-piece jazz band made up of local musicians, students and music educators under the direction of Casey Nagata.

Jazz and blues vocalist Renee received the "Presidential Seal of Approval" when selected to perform the National Anthem for President Barack Obama in 2009.

The Maui Community Band was founded by Lisa Owen in 2003 and today has more than 40 members ranging in ages from 8-78 performing patriotic favorites for this special occasion.

The "Concert in the Park" is sponsored by Lahaina Sunrise Rotary, Hawaii Tourism Authority, Lahaina Restoration Foundation and Lahaina Town Action Committee.

"Jazz at the Shops" takes place at the Outlets of Maui, 900 Front St., with performances by jazz guitarist Prem Brosio, Jake Thomas Quartet and the King Kekaulike Na Alii Big Band. The concert is the finale of a day-long celebration that includes food trucks, Aumakua Polynesian Spectacular and face painting by The Party Zone.
