Sacred Hearts students dissect science with Vicki White

LAHAINA - On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Vicki White, the Science Lady visited the seventh grade classroom of Sacred Hearts School to educate us on anatomy by dissecting frog and sheep eyes.

At the onset, I was quite intimidated by the assignment until Vicki shared her enthusiasm with the class. Her attitude intrigued each student in the classroom and brought eagerness to each individual.

Vicki demonstrated each step very thoroughly. By the time it was the students' turn to start dissecting, we knew each step like the back of our hands.

Vicki White, the Science Lady (right) recently visited Sacred Hearts School to educate seventh-graders on anatomy.

When observing the inside of the frog, I could analyze its complex organ system. The locations of the frog's organs were very similar to a human's organs. By dissecting the frog, I was able to visualize my own organ system.

When dissecting the sheep's eye, we extracted the lens. The lens was a transparent, circular part of the eye that reflects light to focus on the retina. The lens determines the distance of which an eye can distinguish. When we withdrew the lens, it uncovered the tapetum lucidum. The tapetum lucidum is found in many mammals and is established in the choroidea of an eye. Tapetum lucidum gives some animals their marvelous night vision. The tapetum lucidum astonished me because of its fluorescent hue.

This experience wouldn't have been possible without the magnificent Vicki White. She is on her Fall Motion Tour at the moment.

We met Vicki on Halloween 2017, when she had stopped by our school on her last tour. She conducted an assembly for kids from the grades of kindergarten to eighth. Vicki has the ability to make everything enjoyable and understandable for all ages.

Vicki will be back in town from Jan. 28 to Feb. 13, 2019. For more information, please visit her site at www.VickiWhitetheScienceLady.com.
