August 2, 2018
Lahaina News

LAHAINA - Dr. Miguel Solis, taking on the role as the new principal at Sacred Hearts School, has relocated from Los Angeles, California, to Maui with his wife, Dr. Lisa Zamora, and their adorable two-year-old son, Noah.

The family arrived last month. They are settling into their new home and busy at school preparing for the 2018-19 school year. Miguel, always with a warm and welcoming smile, has been busy preparing his new office and meeting with staff members and parents, often while Sister Monica, Mary or Rovy can be seen playing with rambunctious little Noah in the courtyard, or Wendy Coon walking the little guy around campus. The warm Solis presence has been a nice addition to the already charming little school nestled in the heart of Lahaina Town.

There is much excitement for all that Dr. Solis will contribute to the school. He is a visionary man who knew he would one day be practicing in the islands.

Joined by his wife, Dr. Lisa Zamora, and their two-year-old son, Noah, Dr. Miguel Solis is the new principal at Sacred Hearts School. He said he is eager to contribute innovative 21st century practices and programs to excite students.

As most of his fellow University of Southern California classmates pursuing their Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership aspired to practice in the Los Angeles area after graduation, Miguel could not stop thinking about venturing to a Hawaii school to share his gifts.

"I grew up coming to Hawaii with my family, and it always held a special place in my heart," he said. So, when the opportunity for the leadership role at Sacred Hearts School surfaced, he knew he was ready to pursue his dream.

Miguel, who received his Doctorate Degree from UCS's Rossier School of Education and a Master's Degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University, is eager to contribute new, innovative 21st century practices and programs to Sacred Hearts that will excite students and make then eager to learn. He understands that each child learns differently and encourages teaching outside of the box.

He emphasizes the need to first and foremost learn about each student and genuinely make them feel they embody a key aspect within themselves that needs to be developed and nurtured. All of this is a process.

He encourages individualized learning through Blended Learning and Flipping the Classroom methods vs. traditional whole learning.

"I'm focused on being a positive role model for all of our students and meeting their educational needs," he said.

Dr. Solis also believes that building leadership among school staff and students is essential for 21st century learning and leading, and he plans to work with seasoned teachers on leadership skills and working toward professional development training to keep up with Mainland teaching trends.

"I'm eager to be working alongside educators who are dedicated and passionate about what they do," he added.

With only a few days until the beginning of the new school year, kids begin to wind down from summer play, parents shuffle to gather school supplies and Dr. Solis waits with excitement to begin his new role as principal of Sacred Hearts School.

"I come to this position with energy and excitement as I look forward to meeting and working with all members of this school community," he concluded.
