LAHAINA – Two West Side Rotary Clubs joined their efforts at the Lahaina Safeway to collect “cans and cash” for the Maui Food Bank.

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset spent the entire day on Saturday, April 21, manning the collection table from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the Lahaina Sunset Club was joined by members of the Rotary Club of Lahaina and members of the Maui Preparatory Academy Interact Club to help with the collection effort.

The last two afternoon shifts were spearheaded by Lahaina Sunset Foundation Chair Phylecia Platte, who not only worked the table for four-and-a-half hours but oversaw the counting of the cash and the packing and marking of the boxes for collection by Maui Food Bank.

The clubs reported amazing final results: 14 boxes of collected food and $943.30 in cash and checks.

According to Marlene Rice, director of development for the Maui Food Bank, “For all the Rotary Club members, I want to thank you for your commitment on Saturday, April 21st, to support the needs of the Maui Food Bank and, more importantly, the community on Maui.

“More than ever before, working poor families, seniors on fixed incomes and single parents are relying on the Maui Food Bank just to make it month to month. Because of folks like the Rotary Clubs who share our vision, we are able to make sure that no one in our island ‘ohana goes to bed hungry.”
