LAHAINA - Tenth District Rep. Angus McKelvey last week announced the release of $425,971 for air conditioning for Lahainaluna High School.

Sixth District Sen. Roz Baker also applauded the project, noting that the air conditioning for portables at LHS is "so needed."

McKelvey previously secured the funding for the project in the state budget and is "happy to see the funds being released by the DOE to move forward on the much-needed cooling of the Lahainaluna classrooms."

"My hope is now that the contract has been awarded, the work can be done in time to have the buildings cooled at the hottest part of the year," he said.

This contract for air conditioning is an integral part of the overall Lahainaluna High School Classroom Building Project award, which will include seven general classrooms, a self-contained Special Education room, restrooms, a conference room, a faculty center and an electrical room.

McKelvey is also pleased that the contract was awarded to Betsill Brothers LLC, a local company from Kihei that ranks in the top 9 percent of Hawaii licensed contractors.

"Having a local company do this project is an important step in making sure it's done right, and I'm happy to see this important project for our kids going to a Maui business," he said.

According to the Department of Education, construction on this project will begin soon.

Work involves installation of air conditioning in six portable classroom buildings.

Work includes hazardous material removal and controls, selective demolition, roofing, painting, air conditioning installation, control and testing, duct work, electrical and other related work.
