LAHAINA - The explosion in mixed martial arts and the UFC has spiked interest in Jiu Jitsu around the world, and Lahaina is no exception in this endeavor.

Last month, Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu, previously 808 Jiu Jitsu, celebrated its tenth anniversary here on the West Side at their training site at 11 Ulupono St. in the new Lahaina industrial area along Keawe Street.

Sensei Christian Grandi is the founder, leader and mentor of the program that was renamed to honor his master, Carlson Gracie of the world-renowned Gracie Jiu Jitsu family.

Sensei Christian Grandi recently changed the name of his school to Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu to honor his master, the late Carlson Gracie of the world-renowned Gracie Jiu Jitsu family.

The school has propagated this martial art in Lahaina to youngsters and seniors alike with a current enrollment of students ranging in age from four to 64 years of age.

Sensei Grandi has trained in this traditional martial art for over 36 years, having begun his pathway at age four with Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Brazil.

Grandi grew up in Brazil and Sweden, where he also earned a college degree in Physical Education.

He relocated to Maui and soon thereafter established his school here in Lahaina that has prospered and grown over the decade to produce talented practitioners of Jiu Jitsu.

The school has had several championship efforts at the semi-annual NAGA (North American Grappling Association) tournaments on Oahu.

"We have classes for all ages Monday through Saturday, from morning 'til evening, and we invite everyone to come down and join us," said Sensei Grandi. "My teacher, Sensei Carlson Gracie, passed away recently, and so that is why we have changed the name of our school to honor him. I feel really blessed to be able to do what I love. With God's help, I hope to be able to continue on for many more years to come."

Sensei Grandi added that he can still be reached at 808jiujitsu.com for more information.
