LAHAINA – Four senior students of Lahainaluna High School brought home winning medals during the eighth Maui Regional Science Olympiad Tournament, which was held at the University of Hawaii Maui College on Feb. 10.

Alexis Matias and Ryan Agbayani took home silver medals in Anatomy and Physiology, while Jacob Presley and LeighAnn Kaiser earned bronze medals in Chemistry Lab.

“I’m proud of our students knowing that I have full confidence in their capabilities to excel in their chosen event,” said Andrew Heusinkvelt, biology teacher and coach of the Lunas’ Olympiad team. “In fact, we are now planning to form a Science Olympiad Club at the school and start recruiting more members.”

Although the freshmen members didn’t receive any awards, they are looking forward to next year’s tournament.

“When I was assigned to be in the Disease Detective event, I was hesitant, but nevertheless, I took the challenge,” said Patricia Morales. “The experience I got made me more excited, and I will participate on that event again.”

The other members of the team are Julian Armstrong, David Hirsch, Jorden Beam, Kendall Beam, Hokulua Godoy and Jesabel Alibin.
