Build community by giving your area a spring cleaning

Does your neighborhood or favorite beach need a spring cleaning?

Malama Maui Nui (MMN) is launching its annual spring cleanup campaign on Saturday, March 3, with "A Day of Community" in Waiehu.

The event from 9 a.m. to noon at Leisure Estates Park near Sandpiles Beach will kick-off MMN's annual spring cleanup campaign, and neighborhoods throughout Maui, Molokai and Lanai are invited to create their own cleanups during the month of March.

MMN believes this is a great opportunity for island residents to take pride in their environment as well as a chance to build stronger bonds for healthier communities in the future.

"If we're going to be successful in solving some of the issues that are facing our environment and our neighborhoods today, then it has to start in our own backyard," said Malama Maui Nui Community Relations Specialist Megan Moseley.

"Joining together with our neighbors is vital if we want to start changing our world for the better, so the burden won't fall on future generations. We believe in the spirit of community, and that's what this cleanup initiative is focused on. We hope people become inspired and build better relationships with their neighbors during this campaign."

This year's spring cleanup sponsors include the Blue Zones Project, Minit Stop and county Department of Environmental Management.

Prior to launching the spring cleanup campaign, MMN will host a special coordinator training and potluck from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Feb. 24, at its baseyard in Puunene. The theme of the training is "Clean Your Plate." Share a meal and learn how to build community in your moku. Attendees can sign up at
