LAHAINA - Despite the disappointment of a losing record, the Lahainaluna High School girls soccer team maintains a high-spirited and positive approach to the current season.

Interim coach Chris Baum, standing in for longtime West Side youth soccer mentor Sky Delaney (who is on temporary leave), describes the team as, "Dedicated and enthusiastic, and a group that has worked hard for constant improvement - especially in conditioning - since August.

"They have a great attitude - they carry themselves with pride for their school. We couldn't have asked for a better group," stated Coach Chris, who is assisted by Nate Mau, recently before practice at Sue D. Cooley Stadium on campus.

The team is a blend of different experience levels from the AYSO, club and high school programs.

Current captains of the team are senior, four-year student-athlete Mihana Ho and first-year player Mia Prowley. Rounding out the roster are seniors Kiana Torres, Tina Mau and Atasha Sandoval; juniors Kalea Acevedo, Siranny Lopez and Trinity Scanlon; sophomores Kiara Clark, Mckenna Cowen, Kailea Badua and Karen Cardenas; and first-year players Tori Vera, Ihi Garcia, Keiry Flores, Shaden Flores, Ana Gomez and Kahea Garcia.

The Lady Lunas finished last year at the bottom of the Maui Interscholastic League standings, but Coach Chris sees the potential for the team to step up the ladder in the current campaign.

"The quality of the youth soccer in Lahaina is improving, and the important thing is these girls all have a fantastic attitude to show up for practice every day and be ready to go. We'll try to match up as best as we can, and we can do that," he said.

"Most of all, thanks to Sky for his leadership and to all the parents and families for their support of the team. It has really been inspiring to watch the girls grow and to see their resiliency as the season progresses," Coach Chris concluded.
