Fund awards Maui Prep grant to increase student access

December 14, 2017
Lahaina News

NAPILI - For the fourth year in a row, and in recognition of Maui Preparatory Academy as a high-performing nonprofit, the Robert E. Black Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation is providing the school with $45,000 in flexible funding for the 2017-18 academic year.

This funding supports Maui Prep's efforts to expand student access and to deepen the school's commitment to 21st century learning and college preparation.

These efforts include offering alternative transportation to students to expand the school's geographic reach, tuition restructuring, and enrollment flexibility for the lower school.

Maui Prep's commitment to meeting student demand and interests will lead to changes in course offerings and scheduling that include new and enhanced STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) programs; extending the instructional calendar to provide for after-school, semester abroad and summer options; and cultivating hybrid online learning opportunities that expand the school's course options.

Finally, Maui Prep is generating a new strategic plan for the next five years that will help it maintain both its focus and flexibility in responding to the ever-changing world for which its students prepare.

Maui Prep is already above the average on many of the metrics related to student access and success. The school has among the most culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse student populations on Maui; 29 percent of Maui Prep's families earn below the state's median income level, and over 40 percent of students receive tuition aid.

Another measure of Maui Prep's true success is its college placement record. Each year, 100 percent of Maui Prep's graduates apply to, and are accepted into, four-year colleges and universities, and qualify for well over a million dollars in both merit and need-based awards.

Located on a scenic campus in Napili, Maui Preparatory Academy is an independent college preparatory school with a community-based mission for day students in grades preschool-7 and for day and boarding students in grades 8-12.

Maui Prep is dedicated to providing a rigorous, interdisciplinary, academic program combining arts enrichment, athletics and community service as part of its core values.

The school has been recognized statewide and nationally for its exceptional programs, including marine studies, robotics and engineering.

Maui Prep celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2015 and today enrolls over 220 students, including boarding students from North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
