KAHULUI - Those looking for an opportunity to share a talent, a message or an act are invited to the University of Hawaii Maui College Music Club "Open Mic" on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. in the Pilina Building Multipurpose Room on campus.

This sought-after event has provided a venue for students, faculty and members of the community and a chance to play an instrument, perform poetry or stand-up comedy, dance, act, sing or share a hidden talent in front of an audience.

The free, family-friendly, moderated event has been popular for the past six years, as there is no age restriction for performers.

The “Open Mic” event will kick-off with a performance by the traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music group Kuikawa (below). A keiki ensemble from Maui Music Mission from West Maui will also perform.

Talents are encouraged to arrive early to sign up; light refreshments will be provided.

UH Maui College's Institute for Hawaiian Music students, students and faculty from performing arts classes, as well as members of the Music Club are also expected to share special performances. Some games and crafts for the keiki will also be available.

"Today's variety in the entertainment industry has opened a wider range of possibilities and opportunities," said Karyn Sarring, advisor to the Music Club.

"If you know anyone who has a unique talent, or someone who would benefit from the experience, please encourage them to attend."

The event is the culminating activity for UH Maui College's International Festival, celebrating its inclusiveness and diversity in culture.

Various events are scheduled throughout the day, including a parade of flags, Japanese Obon and K-pop dances, Chinese dizi and erhu performances, an ukulele workshop and learning Spanish songs.

An ethnic food sampling is also scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room.
