New group’s mission is to save Ka‘anapali

By Staff | Aug 31, 2017

Save Ka’anapali, a new group that includes members of West Maui’s paddling community, is concerned about housing proposed above popular Hanakao’o Beach Park (Canoe Beach) and other potential impacts of the Ka’anapali Golf Courses Revitalization Project.

They will hold a community meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the West Maui Senior Center to discuss the proposed development.

The group noted on its Facebook page: “Come learn about the project, the impacts, and how you can get involved! Kai Keahi, Nori Tihada, and Mike Tihada will share their mana’o about this project. We will also have Save Ka’anapali T-shirts for sale to raise money for legal costs.

“Please SHARE and spread the word. Let’s pack the house and let the developers and county know that we do not approve more luxury home development on the West Side.”

Save Ka’anapali’s timing is perfect, because the county is beginning an update to the West Maui Community Plan, and consultants are working on the draft environmental impact statement for the Ka’anapali Golf Courses Revitalization Project.

The group’s Facebook page explores themes county planners and all Maui residents should consider, including what Canoe Beach means to locals and its role in perpetuating Hawaiian culture and traditions.

There are also valid points – rarely heard in hearings for projects – about the downside of resort development, including loss of shoreline access; and, citing the economy and creation of jobs, approval of luxury homes that most residents here can’t afford. (In fact, nearly half of Maui homebuyers last year were from out of state.)

If you are concerned about the project and want to “Save Ka’anapali,” attend the meeting and get involved.
