Lahaina News

WAILUKU - Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) has a topnotch, Lahaina-based stage management team making sure everything runs like clockwork in its blockbuster summer musical, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," concluding this weekend at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater.

Angel Emerson Carter, production manager at MAPA and stage manager for the show, has been on Maui for about three years.

Before joining MAPA, she worked as the production and stage manager for the Maui Theatre ("'Ulalena," "Burn'n Love," "Fourever Fab").

Carter was born "with a suitcase in her hand," and her freelance career has taken her through 32 states in nine years, working in venues such as New York City, Carnival Cruise Lines and a national tour.

Her favorite stage management credits include "Mary Poppins," "Tarzan," "Every Christmas Story Every Told," "Mother Trucker," "One Act Series" and "A Christmas Story, the Musical."

Carter is trained in stage combat (MACE: Movement & Combat Education-certified), carries a license in pyrotechnics and has over ten years of experience working with International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (not card-carrying).

She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theatre/Stage Management from Wright State University.

Assistant Stage Manager Kristie Lickliter is new to Maui, having come to the island recently from Dayton, Ohio.

She also studied stage management at Wright State University, after which she became the box office manager at Beavercreek Community Theatre.

Lickliter stage managed numerous shows there and in the surrounding area, including "Sweeney Todd," "Dog Sees God," "Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Urinetown," and "The Producers."

Lickliter was also contracted to stage manage "The Wiz," "As It Is In Heaven" and "Dracula" for Sinclair Community College, where she also helped students learn the stage management process.

She has spent numerous hours on various backstage positions, but stage management is her passion.

Tickets are selling fast for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (see story on page 14).
