Vote for an important Lahainaluna position

August 17, 2017
Lahaina News

School Community Councils play a vital role in Hawaii's education system. Part of the leadership structure at each school, SCCs enable shared decision making among principals, teachers, school staff, parents, students and community members to improve student achievement.

The SCC is comprised of the principal, two teacher representatives, two classified staff representatives, two parent representatives, two student representatives (one from the day school and one from the Boarding Department) and one community representative. All serve two-year, alternating terms except for the principal, who serves for the duration of his or her tenure, and student representatives, who serve a one-year term but may be re-elected.

Earlier this summer, word went out that Lahainaluna High School needed a new Community Representative, and two strong nominations were received: Jeff Rogers and Ryan Beenken.

The community is asked to go to https://goo.gl/forms/l 75DDWrVVM5uz8wy1 between now and Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. to vote for one of the two individuals.

"It will be a privilege to welcome either of these two very qualified gentlemen to the SCC. Their willingness and ability to consistently, and continuously, give back to the community is deeply appreciated," noted Ashley Olson of the Lahainaluna SCC.

Rogers has lived in Lahaina since 1978, is married, and is the father of three sons who all graduated from Lahainaluna. He has been with the Lahainaluna High School Foundation since 2008 and was a driving force behind building the Sue D. Cooley Stadium.

Prior to his involvement with the foundation, Rogers was a substitute teacher for 15 years. He has served on the Lahaina Intermediate School and Princess Nahi'ena'ena Elementary School/Community-Based Management panels, which were the precursor to today's SCCs.

Rogers also served in leadership roles with the PTSA at Lahainaluna High School, Lahaina Intermediate and Princess Nahi'ena'ena Elementary, and for four years with the Hawaii State PTSA.

Beenken, a resident of Lahaina for over four years, served as the sales and marketing manager of Hard Rock Cafe in Lahaina until its closure in December 2016. He organized several community events, such as the annual Thanksgiving Day meal for the homeless and hungry, Pinktober events, and fundraisers for local families in need.

He currently serves as general manager for the new Beach Bum's BBQ & Island Grill located in Napili Plaza.

Beenken is a three-year member of the LahainaTown Action Committee, serving on the board for the past two years as secretary. He also has been a three-year member of the Maui Wedding Association Board of Directors, serving as the vice president for 2016.

His interests include community involvement in public education, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs, philanthropy education, and social justice and equality.

Two great candidates for an important position. Go to https://goo.gl/forms/l75DDWrVVM5uz8wy1 and vote.
