SBS Tournament of Champions announces $300,000-plus raised for charity at 2017 event

KAPALUA - The SBS Tournament of Champions announced that the 2017 event raised more than $300,000 for Maui charities.

With this year's addition, the tournament and host organizations have donated nearly $6 million to Hawaii community charities since its move to Maui in 1999.

"We want to thank our sponsors, volunteers and all spectators for their support, who allow us to give back to this wonderful community," said Nancy Cross, executive director of the SBS Tournament of Champions.

"The island of Maui always embraces this event with open arms, and we take pride in being able to help support these worthy local organizations."

The six primary beneficiaries of the 2017 event are Boy Scouts of America, Friends of the Children's Justice Center, Hale Makua Health Services, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui and Lahainaluna High School Foundation.

As part of their relationship with the tournament, these designated beneficiaries assisted in promoting the event, offsetting costs, providing volunteers and much more.

Additionally, a donation was made to participants of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, Maui Junior Golf and Lahaina Junior Golf for their commitment to promoting and growing the game of golf among Hawaii's youth.

Several other local non-profits also benefitted from the tournament through its Golf for Maui Charities program, which gave 501(c)(3) organizations the opportunity to promote the sale of tickets to this year's tournament and receive 100 percent of the net proceeds.

The 2018 SBS Tournament of Champions returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua Jan. 3-8. All four competitive rounds will be broadcast on Golf Channel.
