Lahaina News

LAHAINA - Lahaina Arts Society this month is featuring artwork by Beth Cooper and Karen Scarborough in its galleries in the Old Lahaina Courthouse.

Cooper's new linoleum cut artwork is on display in the Old Jail Gallery until June 5. The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. Come, meet the artist and ask her questions about the process of linoleum cut printing.

Cooper has been working on linoleum cut prints and is showing the latest pieces she's printed. The bold, stark contrast of the black ink on white paper, and some prints of handmade, hand-marbled paper are available for purchase. The work is framed and ready to ship anywhere.

Karen Scarborough captured the end of the sugar cane era in Hawaii. Some works were actually painted at 4 a.m. during the last cane burns.

Cooper was born and raised in Hawaii. She has been a wild land firefighter, school teacher and now a full-time artist here on Maui. Her work is found all over the world.

For more information on when she will be demonstrating in the gallery, call LAS at 661-0111.

Scarborough is the featured artist in the Banyan Tree Gallery until June 5. Her vibrant, original oil painting exhibition reflects the unchanging beauty of Maui. All works have been done "plein air" (outside on location).

Her paintings are colorful impressions of tropical subjects that provoke viewers to feel the beauty of the sunset, power of the waves, quiet peace of walking the beach at sunrise or everyday routines of living or visiting Maui.

The opening reception will be on Friday, May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. during the Lahaina Second Friday Town Party celebration at the gallery under the Banyan Tree.

Scarborough will do painting demonstrations on Tuesdays (May 23 and 30) from 1 to 4 p.m., completing a painting at each demo. For more information, call LAS at 661-0111.
