KAHULUI - Organizers of TEDxMaui recently announced the complete lineup of speakers and performers for the third annual TEDx event.
Celebrated presenters from Hawaii and beyond will share their big ideas on stage in 18 minutes or less.
This independently organized event licensed by TED takes place on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater. Tickets are now on sale through the MACC's Box Office at 242-SHOW.
Robert Cazimero, award-winning Hawaiian singer, songwriter, pianist, kumu hula and contributor to the Hawaiian cultural renaissance, will speak at TEDxMaui.
"The mosaic of humanity blows me away," said TEDxMaui Speaker Liaison Emma White, who led the event's curatorial process along with the TEDxMaui team and advisory board.
"We have, quite simply, a lineup that exceeds my dreams."
New additions to the 2014 TEDxMaui presenter lineup include, from Maui, Adaptations Dance Theater, a cutting-edge professional contemporary dance ensemble; Dr. Svetlana Berdyugina, NASA astronomer, researcher of extraterrestrial life, physics professor, discoverer and artist; Rosemary "Rosie" Kulhavy-Sutherland, King Kekaulike High School student, TEDxYouth@SeaburyHall speaker and humorist who inspires her peers; Rick Rutiz, founder and director of Hana Build, which mobilizes at-risk youth to learn construction skills to benefit themselves and their community; and Sunny Savage, wild food harvester, expert forager, teacher and adventurer.
Oahu speakers coming to the Maui event include Daniel Anthony, food sovereignty leader, local farming advocate and driving force behind the movement to bring kalo back to our classrooms, kitchens and local economies; Taimane Gardner, dazzling and innovative ukulele virtuoso and songwriter; Dr. Bradley Willcox, world-renowned longevity researcher, physician, co-author of "The Okinawan Diet Plan" and "The Okinawa Program;" and Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, Kanaka Maoli teacher, cultural practitioner, community leader, and one of first openly-transgender candidates to run for a statewide political office in the U.S.
Coming from the Mainland U.S. to speak are Daedelus (Alfred Darlington), the "mad scientist of music," artist, producer, composer and performer; B.J. Fogg, decision scientist, behaviorist, founder of Stanford's Persuasive Tech Lab and one of Fortune's "10 new gurus you should know;" and Edward Readicker-Henderson, widely published vagabonding travel writer and contributing editor of National Geographic Traveler and ISLANDS magazines.
They join the event's previously announced presenters: Dr. Samuel M. 'Ohukani'ohi'a Gon III, senior scientist and cultural advisor at The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii and world-renowned expert on Hawaiian ecology; Dave Kalama, Maui's own surf icon and big wave pioneer; Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, award-winning peace, multicultural and international studies educator and children's book author, co-founder of the community peace training program Ceeds of Peace with Kerrie Urosevich, and campaigner for her brother, President Barack Obama; Dr. Kerrie Urosevich, community mobilizer and peace builder, Early Learning Action Strategy coordinator for the Hawaii Governor's Office, and co-founder of Ceeds of Peace; and Kimi Werner, Maui born and raised champion spearfisher and freediver, artist and chef.
