Sen. Roz Baker of Lahaina filed her nomination papers on May 22.

HONOLULU – Sen. Roz Baker last week announced the release of funding identified by the Hawaii State Legislature for construction projects for six schools in Senate District 6. Four schools in Lahaina are included in the list of projects.

The appropriations include: $650,000 for one general portable classroom at Lahaina Intermediate School; classroom building project ($7,224,000), re-roof Building P3 ($65,000) and erosion control ($124,000) at Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School; $25,000 to renovate and paint various buildings at King Kamehameha III Elementary School; and $48,000 to replace exhaust fans at Lahainaluna High School.

“The funding released by the administration spans a plethora of renovations and building projects that need to be addressed as soon as possible,” said Sen. Baker, who represents Senate District 6 (South and West Maui).

“Six schools in the Lahaina and Kihei areas will be seeing a variety of improvements, from new classrooms to essential equipment and structure replacements.”

“My colleagues and I worked hard to get these items into the capital improvement budget,” she added. “And I’m grateful that the administration has recognized the value of investing in education infrastructure on Maui and across the state.”

In the upcoming election, Sen. Baker faces challengers in Democrat Terez M. Amato, Republican Jared P. DuBois and Liberatarian Bronson Kekahuna Kaahui.

“It has been my honor and privilege to represent the people of South and West Maui in the Senate since 2002. I look forward to continuing to serve our district with integrity, dedication and compassion, and to work on important consumer protection, healthcare, education, kupuna, equity and workforce issues,” Sen. Baker commented.

“Working with a dynamic Maui Senate team and my colleagues in the House, we’ve secured hundreds of millions of dollars in capital improvement projects for highways, airports, small boat harbors, schools, Maui Memorial Medical Center, UH-Maui College and other much-needed infrastructure. We’ve focused on helping people and addressing critical services in our communities,” she noted, adding, “I’m fortunate to be assisted by excellent staff at the Capitol who can follow up on constituent concerns even when the legislature isn’t in session.”

She concluded, “I’m honored to have my candidacy endorsed thus far by the ILWU, UPW, and the Patsy T. Mink PAC. I believe they appreciate my support for working people and advocacy on behalf of women and gender equity. It was particularly gratifying to have my legislative and community work on behalf of victims of domestic violence recognized by Women Helping Women recently. I know there’s more work to do, and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”
