Students raising awareness on lupus

Rotary Interact Clubs from six Maui high schools are joining up during Lupus Awareness Month in May to raise awareness about the disease and funds for its research.

Students from Maui Preparatory Academy, Seabury Hall, King Kekaulike, Baldwin, Maui High and St. Anthony will be soliciting donations from businesses, selling awareness bracelets and hair ties, hosting a "Lavender for Lupus Day" on Friday, May 9, in which everyone is encouraged to wear lavender (purple) in support of lupus awareness, and setting up an information booth at Seabury Hall's Craft Fair on Saturday, May 10.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own healthy cells and tissues. Its cause is unknown; symptoms can include arthritic joint pain and stiffness; chronic, spontaneous fever; skin rashes; fatigue; sunlight sensitivity; hair loss; and chest pain. It is a lifelong illness.

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1.5 million Americans have lupus, and that 10 percent of those with lupus have a parent or sibling also affected by the disease. One in 250 women between the ages of 14 and 45 are likely to develop lupus. For more information, contact Rowan Mulligan at rmulligan14@seaburyhall.org or (808) 280-9866.
