WAILUKU - Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. (MEO) recently named its Volunteer (May Fujiwara) and Benefactor of the Year (Pacific Painting & Refinishing Inc.) at its annual recognition luncheon.
Lahaina-Honolua Senior Citizens Club President Fujiwara volunteers her time to serve as secretary-treasurer of the MEO Board of Directors and sits on the Executive, Finance and Transportation Ad Hoc committees.
Fujiwara not only volunteers her time at MEO, but she is a strong advocate for the community. She organizes fellow seniors and testifies in support or opposition of legislation at the state and county.
During May Fujiwara’s involvement with Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. over a period of many years, she has graciously offered hundreds of hours of expertise and support.
In her nomination of Fujiwara, MEO CEO Lyn McNeff said, "May is the epitome of a caring, compassionate, hardworking advocate for seniors. She has contributed much to the betterment and well-being of Maui County's senior population. She is a true champion."
Over the past several years, Pacific Painting Inc. bid on and completed several small projects for MEO.
As MEO's Mahalani building began to show its age, the facility needed a fresh coat of paint. Pacific Painting's W. Kalani and his crew graciously donated their equipment, supplies and time to get the job done.
Along with the Maui County Correctional Center Workline, the company power-washed, prepped and repainted the entire exterior of the two-story building. This saved MEO over $18,000 in supply, equipment and labor costs.
McNeff said, "Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. is fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers who unselfishly share their time, talent and treasures with us and our com-
munity. Looking back over the years, MEO's volunteer pool grew from a handful to over 300, volunteering more than 3,000 hours annually."
Incorporated on March 22, 1965, MEO is a nonprofit Community Action Agency whose mission is to strengthen the community while helping people in need restore their hope, reach their potential and enrich their lives.
