Lahaina Girls Softball needs coaches and board members

By Staff | Nov 7, 2013

Similar to Maui Style Wrestling, the West Maui Youth Basketball League and Lahaina Junior Golf, Lahaina Girls Softball teaches keiki the game and paves the way for future success.

Going way back to when Earle Kukahiko led the program, Lahaina Girls Softball players have grown up to star on the Lahainaluna High School softball team. Some even earned college scholarships.

With the new season approaching, the youth softball program needs help.

Lahaina Girls Softball is short of coaches for the six and under and eight and under girls teams for the upcoming season.

Parents who are planning to register their daughters this year are encouraged to consider volunteering as a coach.

“Unfortunately, without coaches, we cannot have the team,” explained Charmaine Ganer, LGS board president.

“Our mission is to involve all girls of all ages to learn to play softball, but because we are a nonprofit organization, we need volunteers from the community to make this happen.”

The season for the teams begins in February and goes through May. Keiki age six and under use a T-Ball, and eight and under players use coach pitch with T-Ball backup. Coaching experience is not necessary.

Volunteers are needed by Nov. 15 to hold registration for the teams in December.

Lahaina Girls Softball is also looking for board members for next year, as the current group is in its final term.
