Maui Community Band to play free concert

By Staff | Oct 10, 2013

Another highlight of the concert will be “Rhapsody for Euphonium and Band” featuring the Maui Community Band’s own Glen Kitagawa.

WAILUKU – The Maui Community Band under the direction of Lisa Owen will perform an exciting and varied program on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Iao Theater starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

This will be a special concert for the band, as it is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Many of the musicians who came to the first rehearsal are still members of the group.

To commemorate the anniversary, well-known New York composer Carl Strommen was commissioned to write a piece of music for the band, which resulted in “Silversword ‘Ahinahina o Maui.”

This magnificent work – charting the life cycle of Haleakala’s rare and stunning plant – will be premiered.

Other music will include “Chinese Folk Song Suite” with a five-piece percussion section, marches and much more.

The band has three assistant conductors: Lance Jo, Stephen Rodrigues and Ted Manzano.

In addition to the Maui Community Band, there will be a performance by the Maui Brass Ensemble with members Cody Sarmiento and Julius Galanto on trumpets, Sue Nakama on French horn, Stephen Rodrigues on trombone and Lisa Owen on tuba.

They will perform music from the middle ages to modern day, including a rousing version of “Amazing Grace.”
