College and Career Night is intended to show keiki that they can be anything they want to be if they work hard. Another goal is to inspire parents to start saving earlier than they might think for their child’s future. PHOTO BY HOPSING COON.

LAHAINA – “When I grow up, I want to be” It’s never too early for kids to start thinking about what they want to be and for parents to start thinking about the costs of education.

Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina is hosting its first annual College and Career Night on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 7.30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. This free event is open to all kids in grades K-8 and their parents across the entire community.

Principal Susan Hendricks said, “We want to get the kids thinking about what they want to be when they grow up and how many years of training might be involved in that career. And we want to give parents useful information on how to provide for the costs of education beyond high school.”

Bonnie West, American Savings Bank branch manager, said, “The K-8 college night is a unique event we are happy to be part of. Too often, parents don’t start saving until it’s too late. We want to help West Maui families prepare for their children’s bright future.”

Kristy Arakawa from Lahainaluna High School’s College and Career Center will talk about the career pathway program at the high school and about some unique scholarship opportunities.

The University of Hawaii Maui College will have representatives at the event to talk about college programs and financial aid options. A number of working professionals, nurses, firefighters, police officers, engineers, chefs and teachers will be there to talk about their chosen career.

Several local businesses are supporting the event financially through awarding $500 scholarships to be paid into 529 savings plans at American Savings Bank; 529 savings plans are protected savings that must be transferred directly to an institute of higher education post high school.

There will be a chance to win one of these scholarships that will be awarded through a drawing at the end of the night. And it’s not too late for any local business that wishes to join this event – just call the school office at 661-4720 to find out about offering a scholarship and taking part in the evening.
