Oktoberfest to support Rotary Club's community efforts

LAHAINA - The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise will hold its second annual Oktoberfest event at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The benefit will feature an authentic German buffet, great music and dancing with The Oompah Band, and a silent auction ending at 8 p.m.

King Kamehameha III Elementary School’s 100th Anniversary Committee launched the year’s festivities with an Educational Kick Off Assembly on Monday. The event featured chanting by students, hula, a Hawaiian blessing, artistic rendition of the school’s alma mater by the choir led by teacher Joe Kent and a reading of the history of the school.

With additional resources, the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise can continue to develop programs such as subsidizing meals at the local schools, providing stipends for high school graduates wishing to attend vocational trade schools or college, various monetary donations to numerous nonprofit organizations, and many community projects that directly benefit Lahaina Town and the community.

The club currently seeks silent auction items and/or gift certificates.

Luna softball team holding fundraiser

LAHAINA - Lady Luna Softball is holding a chow fun sale on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tickets are $7 per quart. Pickup will be held at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission.

The chow fun will be made by the Ladies of Lahaina Hongwanji.

School to hold tsunami drill

LAHAINA - King Kamehameha III School will conduct its Tsunami Evacuation Drill on Wednesday, Sept. 25, starting at 8:05 a.m.

Traffic will be impacted from the intersections of Prison and Front streets, Shaw and Front streets, as well as the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and Shaw Street.

The drill will conclude King Kamehameha III School's "September is Safety Month" activities.

Activities sought for LHS boarding students

LAHAINA - The Lahainaluna High School Boarding Department is looking for afternoon activities for boarding students not participating in sports.

The programs would need to be one hour long, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., on Monday through Thursday and involve 30-40 students.

Volunteer in Haleakala Crater

HALEAKALA - Volunteer with the Friends of Haleakala National Park in Haleakala Crater on Oct. 12-14 and stay free at Kapalaoa Cabin on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Help the national park care for native vegetation.

Ho'oilo House participating in B&B for Vets program

LAHAINA - Locally owned Ho'oilo House is once again participating in the B&Bs for Vets program.

Around the country, bed and breakfasts celebrate Veterans' Day by offering free nights to active or retired veterans.

Ho'oilo House has one room left for this promotion; the night of Nov. 11, 2013.

This reservation can only be made by calling Ho'oilo House at (808) 667-6669.

Ho'oilo House looks forward to welcoming a veteran couple and thanking them for their sacrifices.

Baldwin High School to celebrate anniversary

WAILUKU - A meeting to finalize details of H.P. Baldwin High School's 75th Anniversary celebration will be held in the school's new library on Monday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m.

Estate planning seminar set

LAHAINA - The Salvation Army is offering a free educational seminar designed to help people understand how they can benefit from estate planning and charitable giving.

The "Lunch & Learn" seminar will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army Lahaina Corps at 131 Shaw St.

Some of the subjects that guest presenters Elizabeth Ivey (attorney at law) and Ellen Kazama (gift planner) will explain in plain English include estate, financial and gift planning, tax law changes, structure and benefits of a living trust, little-known charitable gift opportunities that benefit both family and community, and using charitable gift planning to maximize income and minimize income taxes.

Lunch will be served. Seating is limited, so reservations are necessary. No solicitations will be made at the seminar.
