Lahaina Girls Fast Pitch Softball team heading to Mainland tournament

By Staff | Jul 25, 2013

The Lahaina Girls Fast Pitch Softball travel team has been holding fundraisers for months now.

LAHAINA – Lahaina Girls Fast Pitch Softball recently concluded another successful season highlighted by the annual Lahaina Invitational Tournament last week that included nine teams from Maui and Oahu.

Over 60 girls participated in the Lahaina program’s regular season this year and made up the five teams in the age divisions from six and under up to the 14U category.

Teams played their games at Ainakea Park in Lahaina and at Patsy Mink Field in Kahului.

Charmaine Ganer, president of LGFPS, noted that the program also competed in the state tournament on Oahu.

After the Lahaina tournament last weekend, they will now focus in on sending a 14U team to Cypress, California, to participate in an event there to be played Oct. 3-10.

“It’s going to cost about $1,800 per player to go to this tournament, so we’ve been having car washes and having kalua pig and lau lau sales for fund raisers,” said Ganer last week, as she helped with final preparations for the tournament held at the Lahaina Recreation Center ball field.

“We’ve been doing fundraisers continuously for months now to send the girls to states and now to the Cypress tournament. We hope we can continue this and maybe make a home-and-home event with the Cypress team.”

The Lahaina 14U team roster going to California includes Lauryn Laborte, Nohili Hong, Seraya Casco, Lily Kamaunu, Kaitlin Hodgins, Ocean Makekau, Vaelei Long, Shelia Sadang Tateyama, Tai-li Tongatailoa, Chelsea Domingo, Samantha Calma and Keani Pagan.

The coaches, who also guided the 12U team during the regular season, are Denton Hong, Ilima Hong, Jeremiah Kamaunu and Rodney Haia.

Ganer was joined on the league’s board of directors by Vice President Malia Sadang, Secretary Rose Hodgins, Treasurer Pam Kaniho and advisors Ann Williams, Althena Cajudoy, Nathan Laborte and Mamo Hussey.

Coaches included Marvin Tevaga and Kievan Haia for the 6U team; Aloha Kaniho, Brian Mahuna, Keaka Mitchell and Pam Kaniho for 8U; and Mamo Hussey, Corrine Nobriga and Rayleen Kama for 10U.

“Our goal has been to try to establish continuity with the youth program up to the high school team,” said Ganer. “We had Coach Lei Nakamura from the Lady Lunas team come down and work with our coaches to get everyone working in the same direction – try to do the same things in the same way. We’re hoping it works out that way.

“My thanks goes out to all the board members, the coaches, families and supporters of the program. Special thanks to Kimo Hodgins for all of his help during the season. He has been a trooper and our go to guy all season long. Mahalo!”
