Maui Surfer Girls to offer scholarships

June 27, 2013
Lahaina News

This summer, Maui Surfer Girls will celebrate 13 years of enriching the lives of hundreds of teenage girls worldwide.

This year, MSG, a surf camp for girls and women in Hawaii, will partner with the Will Smith Foundation to offer scholarship funds for deserving Maui girls to attend the surf camp in July.

The Maui Surfer Girls program aims to develop a well-rounded surfer girl. It starts at 7 a.m., doing yoga on the front lawn of MSG's oceanfront facility. Next, it's off to surf lessons minutes from camp. In the afternoon, the Maui surfer girls refuel on a healthy lunch, participate in an educational "chalk talk" on oceanography or surf etiquette, and then sign up for adventure activities like windsurfing lessons, a rain forest hike, arts and crafts and more. The evenings include campfires with guest professional surfer girls, talent show, "surfer chick flicks" and more.

Surf camp founder Dustin Tester said, "Our students gain not only surfing skills, but they also learn an appreciation for Hawaiian culture and respect for the ocean, all the while building self-confidence in themselves."
