DLNR to discuss Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit

By Staff | Mar 21, 2013

KAHULUI – The public is invited to a free community event at Kahului Harbor on Saturday, March 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. to learn about the new Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit.

A blessing of a new enforcement vessel gifted to the State of Hawaii by Conservation International will take place at 1 p.m.

Part of a pilot program, the unit is set to launch in North Maui by spring 2013 with the goal of developing a successful fisheries enforcement model that will enable the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) to deploy similar units across the state in the future.

The North Maui unit will cover a 13-mile stretch of coastline from Hulu Island to Baldwin Beach Park, extending three miles seaward.
