LAHAINA - The West Maui Senior Center in Lahaina is hosting computer classes for a $2 donation on Friday afternoons commencing at 2:30 p.m.
Veteran teachers are Bobby Lozoff and Rick Lantz. Their course was previously offered at Lahaina Cannery Mall.
"The center has plenty of parking and is a wonderful venue for our classes," Lozoff said.
Lozoff and Lantz are immersed in the Mac World.
"We teach Mac stuff only," Lozoff advised.
It's a casual atmosphere in the classroom during the one-and-a-half-hour lesson.
Topics are as diverse as the changes in technology.
"They could learn how not to get into phishing attacks, how not to get scammed," Lozoff said.
"I'm doing a class on how to use e-mail now. I teach a class on iPhoto; I teach a class on iTunes. I'm going to be giving a class on Facebook - just whatever is current, whatever people need," he explained.
After the holiday season with gifts of iPads, tablets and iPhones under the tree, "we spent three weeks on how to make them talk to each other," Lozoff added.
Lantz is an iPad advocate.
"I believe the iPad is the right computer for many of the seniors; and, if they see it in action, they will see there's no long learning curve. It's as easy as touching an app on the screen and so easy to take with you when traveling, doctor appointments or using anywhere in the house," he commented.
"Most people think iPads are only for consuming content," Lantz continued, "but that's not true. Most college homework assignments can all be done using the iPad, because there are so many great apps. And speaking of college, the textbooks are cheaper on the iPad, and you can use iTunes U to get your assignments, lectures, notes and study material.
"Best of all, the iPads are very portable - even more than a laptop - and have much better battery life," he noted.
With two instructors in the classroom, Lantz commented, "Bobby and I show there's more than one way of using or doing anything on your Mac or iPad/iPhone."
Lozoff compares their style to "Click and Clack, the PBS car guys, for dual commentary."
Weekly announcements are sent to attendees. The announcement for the March 15 class read:
"Last week was basic iPhoto overview on the Mac. This next class (March 21) will be an overview of iTunes on the Mac, and how we use it to organize and deliver content to our iOS devices (iPhones, iPod and iPads). We're not just talking Music but managing our iPhoto albums, PDFs, Books, Apps, Audiobooks, Videos, Podcast, Ringtones, Movies, Music and so much more.
"The following week will be question and answer time as we review the past topics of Mail, iPhoto and iTunes as it pertains to the Mac Our next series can be on topics just for the iOS (iPhone, iPad). Please let us know if you want more Mac topics or iPhone/iPad topics."
The West Maui Senior Center is located at 788 Pauoa St. (near the Pioneer Mill Co. Smokestack) along Lahainaluna Road mauka of Honoapiilani Highway.
