Free concert, Chinese New Year celebration slated in Lahaina

LAHAINA - Lahaina's Hawaiian Music Series will now play a role in Front Street's diverse nightlife.

Lahaina Restoration Foundation (LRF) announced that the monthly music series will now be held on the last Thursday of every month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the Baldwin Home Lawn.

Kicking off the program on Jan. 26 will be Joshua Kahula and Preston Ako.

Dr. Busaba Yip-Douglas will lead a presentation called “Cultural Traditions & Year of the Dragon” at the Wo Hing Museum Friday evening.

Relax under the stars and enjoy the free concert brought to you by LRF. Chairs are limited; blankets, mats and low beach chairs are welcome.

Firecrackers, drum beats, martial arts and lion dancing will kick off Chinese New Year festivities at 5 p.m. in Lahaina on Friday, Jan. 27.

The new year will get off to a great start with a blur of strength and grace, as the lion dancers demonstrate kung fu on the lawn of the Baldwin Home Museum.

After this free, public performance, the lions will then head north on Front Street visiting shops and restaurants along the way. The Wo Hing Museum will be the final stop, where the lions will bless the temple and set off a grand finale of firecrackers.

Activities at the Wo Hing Museum at 858 Front St. will begin at 6 p.m. with children's arts & crafts, farmers' market and hands-on demonstrations of the art of Chinese knot tying.

Dr. Busaba Yip-Douglas will discuss "Cultural Traditions & Year of the Dragon" at 6:30 p.m. in the Wo Hing Museum Cook House. "Year of the Dragon" merchandise and food provided by Fu Lin restaurant will be available for purchase.

Activities on the museum lawns and in the Cook House are free. Museum admission is $7 and includes both the Wo Hing and the Baldwin Home Museum, as well as the popular candlelit tour at the Baldwin Home.
