Tess Cartwright/Mewe Creations, Akaku: Maui Community Television, and Maui Community Theater/Maui OnStage are growing "The Garden of BE" with Akaku Producer Alberto Rojas.

Rojas has transformed Cartwright's original musical stage fantasy, which opened the 2011-12 theater season at the Iao Theater, into a full-length film.

This colorful musical for people of all ages will be screened at the Iao Theater at 68 N. Market St. in Wailuku on Saturday, Jan. 14. The screening is FREE and open to the public, so bring all your friends and family. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the screening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Maui OnStage players learn about Large Yellow’s plan.

Tess explained that "The Garden of BE" has been nearly 20 years in the making.

"Writing at my desk at the Whalers Realty Inc. office at Kahana Gateway Professional Center in 1993, I dreamed of taking my transformative inspirations around the globe. As I wrote the musical's song and story, I dreamed of what the set design for 'The Garden of BE' would be. As I lifted a clear plastic water bottle to my lips, I saw the sparkling convolutions of a flower in the bottom of the container. The image seemed to speak to me, saying, 'I will be your garden.' That magical moment propelled me into the unlimited possibilities waiting to be released from ordinary household plastics, and the symbolism of unlocking the magic genie from the lamp became tangible," Cartwright recalled.

"Creating all manner of flowers, bugs, animals and birds from discarded plastic containers seemed to me a powerful metaphor speaking to the theme of the play, our ever-changing, never-changing lives."

A dream sequence in the performance opens with a guitar playing spaceman, The Great Conduit, accompanied by three Transistors: Transcend, Transform and Transmit.

They sing, "If you don't want to be lost in space, where you won't be found without a trace, Transcend, take to flight, close your eyes to see the light. Transform, give up fear, lock out blame, this is how to play the game. Transmit, don't be afraid, it is your own life you will save."

You must BE there to get the full impact of "BE's" messages of goodwill.

"I am thankful for Director Steven Dascoulias, Choreographer Alexander Cardinalli, Costume Designer Marsha Kelly, Set Designer Caro Walker, Stage Manager Michael Pullian, Music Writer Joseph DeRose and the troupe of talented performers at Maui OnStage for bringing 'The Garden of BE' to the stage, so that Alberto Rojas could record the show for viewing on the big screen at the Iao Theater," Cartwright commented.
