Last week, Kaanapali Land Management Corp. (KLMC) announced the promotion of Howard Hanzawa to senior vice president.

Since joining this land-holding company in 2006, Howard has helped to guide KLMC and its vision for West Maui of "honoring our roots, preserving our spirit."

What he enjoys most is the opportunity to work closely with a dedicated group of community stakeholders who passionately care about the future of Maui.

Howard Hanzawa has been promoted to senior vice president of Kaanapali Land Management Corp.

For the last century, KLMC and its affiliate company, Pioneer Mill Company LLC, have had a hand in helping to shape our West Maui community and its economy.

"Through the years, we've learned that the community needs to be deeply involved in the planning of our projects, such as Ka`anapali 2020, Waine`e Village and Pu`ukoli`i Village Mauka," said Howard.

The 913-acre Ka'anapali 2020 project incorporates distinct communities for residents of varying lifestyles and incomes to live, work and play in West Maui. It includes a mix of residential, recreational, open-space, and public and commercial uses, including a planned acute care medical facility.

Pu`ukoli`i Village Mauka offers a community with a diversity of housing, parks, open space, a school site and community facilities, all capturing the spirit of "coming home."

The 200-acre Waine`e property provides for a community planned expansion of Lahaina Town with affordable and market housing and other community amenities that will enhance the quality of life for residents of West Maui.

The company has also made a true commitment to preserving agriculture in West Maui through their premier agricultural community of Ka`anapali Coffee Farms and through their partnership with MauiGrown Coffee to market the coffee that's grown on the farm.

The coffee that is grown in Kaanapali is becoming known internationally and was recently selected to be served exclusively on all flights to and from Hawaii by Japan Airlines.

They are also dedicated to preserving our island's cultural treasures, such as Honokowai Valley, through their working relationship with Maui Cultural Lands.

"It is with our community members' mana`o and vision that these projects can best integrate affordable housing, recreation, culture, education, senior facilities and healthcare in order to accommodate the needs of our future generations," said Howard.

"It is this concern about the future of our keiki `ohana, as well as a desire to preserve our natural and cultural resources, that drives so many of our community members to dedicate their time in the community planning process which has now extended for more than a decade. For this, we at KLMC are truly grateful for their dedication in helping to shape the future of our community."
