Comedy ‘Sylvia’ opens Friday

KIHEI — ProArts Inc. will present “Sylvia,” the witty and hilarious off-Broadway comedy hit, as the second production of its fall/winter season.

A.R. Gurney’s comic masterpiece centers on this question: what if your dog could talk?

Sylvia, an adorable, salty-tongued “labradoodle” enters the lives of empty-nesters Greg and Kate after their move from the suburbs to Manhattan and proceeds to hilariously disrupt the couple’s marriage.

Greg loves Kate; Kate loves Greg. Greg loves Sylvia; Kate hates Sylvia. Can there be a compromise?

No bones about it — “Sylvia” is howlingly funny! The play contains adult language.

Off-Broadway in 1995, “Sylvia” originally starred Sarah Jessica Parker of “Sex and the City” fame.

“Delicious and dizzy…” wrote a New York Times critic.

“One of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound plays I have ever seen...” noted a New York Daily News reviewer.

“Sylvia” features some familiar and new faces in the cast, including Jackie Shea as the irresistible Sylvia, Scott Newman as new dog owner Greg, Marilynn Hirashima as Kate and Kalani Whitford in a comic tour de force as three characters: one man (Tom), one woman (Phyllis) and one not so sure (Leslie).

The show is directed by ProArts newcomer Mark Collmer, who directed “The Odd Couple” and “The Pirates of Penzance.”

The scenery, which includes projections of the Big Apple and environs, is designed by Caro Walker. Costume design is by ProArts veteran Marsha Kelly and lighting by Bonnie Prucha. ProArts productions are produced by Jonathan Lehman.

Opening night is Oct. 7, and the show runs until Oct. 23 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. There will be no performances Oct. 6 or 9.

ProArts offers reserved seats for adults at $20 and for students 18 and under at $15. Kama‘aina nights are scheduled for Oct. 8, 13 and 20; Hawaii residents get a discount for those performances.

The intimate ProArts Playhouse is located at Azeka (Makai) Shopping Center, 1280 S. Kihei Road. in Kihei. The playhouse is air conditioned with 80 reserved seats. There is free parking, plenty of nearby restaurants and an art gallery inside currently featuring the art of Marjorie Tyler and Ed Lane.
