Show features emotional stories about mothers

WAILUKU — “My Mama Monologues” — a dramatic, action-based reading of true stories about moms — will be staged Friday, May 6, at 8 p.m. at the Historic Iao Theater.

Written each year by men, women and children worldwide, stories about mamas are milky, spicy, hot, cold, ticklish and bittersweet.

The cast of readers represents a diverse community of local Mauians, including all-star favorites, first-timers, seniors and children… maybe even your neighbor.

Playwright Pat Masumoto said, “We will pass out Kleenix as usual, but this year bring your ear trumpets!” You’ll find out why by the end of the show.

She launched “My Mama Monologues” as a gift to her spry mother, Florence Hasegawa of Lahaina, who will turn 103 on May 20.

Hasegawa created a media flurry in 2009 for micro-blogging on Twitter via @GrandmaFlorence.

New tweets will open “My Mama Monologues 2011,” with replies from worldwide followers.

Tickets are $18 at the door. Admission is free for mothers age 80-plus when accompanied by their children and grandchildren.

Due to Wailuku’s Town’s “First Friday” block party, plan to arrive early to find parking.
