Help local junior golfers attend national tournament

March 17, 2011
BY WALTER CHIHARA
There are two bright, new shining stars lighting up our Valley Isle skies and world-class golf courses. Marissa Uradomo and Malu Rosenthal — sophomores at Baldwin and Lahainaluna High School, respectively — are the young guns of the Lahaina Junior Golf Association playing their way on a pathway to success on the links.

Last month, the pair competed in the International Junior Golf Tour Terra Lago Invitational Tournament at Indio, California. At the completion of this tournament, Uradomo and Rosenthal each received an invitation to compete in the prestigious International Junior Golf Tour’s Bridgestone Tournament of Champions at Orlando, Florida, on May 28-30.

The 15-year-old youngsters are the only players from the State of Hawaii to be invited to compete in the event. The tournament will include the top junior division players in the United States from the IJGT and AJGA, as well as the top competitors from Europe and Asia.

“This is a rare opportunity for us to compete against the best of the best,” Marissa and Malu explained recently. “More importantly, there will be a number of college coaches and scouts observing the competition. Being from Hawaii, it is difficult getting noticed in golf and, hopefully, this is an opportunity for us to be seen and get an opportunity for college scholarships. This is the most important aspect of this trip for us.”

“Our parents and grandparents are hardworking people that support us in everything that we do, and we know that they love us very much. They sacrificed so much to help us play in California at the Terra Lago tournament, but now, with the Bridgestone event a very short time away, it will be almost impossible for them to get us to Florida to compete there. For this reason, we are humbly asking for your support in our dream to attend this tournament.”

The cost of the trip — including airfare, room, car, tournament fees and practice rounds — for Marissa, Malu and two chaperones comes out to approximately $4,900. The youngsters and their families would be deeply grateful for any help the Maui community can offer.

Please send donations made out to West Maui Youth Athletic Association (Federal ID #27-3990580), 1037 Wainee St., C-19, Lahaina, HI, 96761, c/o Marissa and Malu.

For further information, please call 357-1439 (Kellie Uradomo) or 214-0353 (Don Rosenthal), or send an e-mail to dpmll5@aol.com.

“We would feel blessed to receive any amount that would help us get closer to attaining our dream. We thank you very much for your consideration and may God bless you all!” the junior golfers concluded.
