MACC exhibit explores hula

KAHULUI — “Ho’oulu: The Inspiration of Hula” will be on display in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer International Gallery through Dec. 23.

A collaboration between the MACC and Hawaii State Art Museum will showcase hula-inspired and hula-related works from the Art in Public Places Collection.

The exhibit will include portraits of loea hula (hula resources) by photographer Shuzo Uemoto, as well as paintings of renowned kumu hula who have received the Order of Distinction for Cultural Leadership from the State of Hawaii: ‘Iolani Luahine, Rosalie Lokalia Montgomery, Mary Kawena Pukui and Edith Kanaka’ole. Several Maui families from uninterrupted genealogical lines of hula have been invited to display their costumes, adornments and implements of hula.

Admission is free; the gallery is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
