Group wants to unite Lahainaluna boarders

March 18, 2010
Lahaina News

Robert “Coach Bobby” Kawaguchi and other Lahainaluna High School alumni have a great idea for a new facility on the historic campus.

They want to display relics of the past, “farm experiences” and memories in a Lahainaluna Boarding Department Museum near Hale Pa‘i.

While the Lahainaluna Boarders Association (LBA) wants to look back into its incredible 174-year history, members also want to strengthen and preserve the school’s boarding tradition.

It’s been a rough year for the department, with boarders required to leave campus on Furlough Fridays and the program appearing on a state Board of Education list of proposed budget cuts.

LBA wants to unify all past boarders and assist current boarders. This is undoubtedly a large group of people with strong connections in business and government.

The Lahainaluna Boarders Association will discuss all of these goals at a potluck at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission on April 16 at 6 p.m. (the night before the school’s beloved David Malo Day celebration).

All former boarders and individuals concerned about perpetuating the Boarding Department tradition are encouraged to attend. LBA is a nonprofit group comprised of volunteers, and there are no fees to join.

LBA will also discuss plans for the Boarding Department’s 175th Reunion next spring on April 15, 2011.

“Make it a weekend to remember... be a part of history,” Kawaguchi wrote.

“We need your assistance to make this all a reality, continue to grow and serve all fellow Lahainaluna boarders.”

For more information, contact Reunion Chair Daniel Aikala at (808) 671-0866, Mike Lee at (808) 454-9767, Richard “Noosh” Nishihara at 870-6478 or Kawaguchi at 281-1462.
