Nominations open for Lahaina Intermediate’s Honors Program

January 14, 2010
BY MARSHA NAKAMURA, Principal, Lahaina Intermediate School
LAHAINA — Happy New Year! In December, I invited you all to experience our Winter Concert with Lahainaluna High School. As promised, it was awesome.

So many students participated with pride. What can I say? Mouths wide open on cue, arms down at their sides instead of over their heads... it was a sight to see. Such a beautiful sound. Again, thank you to Mark Gilmore, Jayme Carlos and Myron Carlos for a wonderful musical presentation. It was great!

As we prepare for next school year’s master schedule, it is time to open nominations for next year’s Honors Program. Along with teacher nominations, students may nominate themselves. Parents may nominate their child. Community members are also welcome to nominate a student to be considered for LIS’ Honors Program. Forms are available at the main office. You may submit nominations from Feb. 16 through Feb. 22. Once the nomination period is closed, matrices rating achievement and academic levels for each student will be completed. A Selection Committee will calculate a final score for each nominee, and a list of those students who qualify to participate in the Honors Program will be produced. If you have any questions regarding this process, please feel free to call the office at 662-3965.

Again, parents, a reminder for you to check your child’s planner every day. Check Edline.net for any missing assignments and grade checks. Teachers update their accounts periodically to help keep you informed of your child’s progress. If you have any questions, please e-mail your child’s teacher(s). E-mail addresses are on Edline.net. If you don’t have a computer, please call the school to speak with the teacher(s). Keep communication lines open and flowing.  Missing assignments are the number one reason for failing grades. LIS knows all children can learn. We need to see evidence before we are able to promote your child. Please be involved in your child’s education. Let’s work as a team for the success of all our children. IMUA!
