The pressure is on to complete assignments at LIS

December 3, 2009
BY MARSHA NAKAMURA, Principal, Lahaina Intermediate School
LAHAINA — Happy Holidays, everyone! Dec. 16 is the last student day of the second quarter.

Deficiency notices were sent home. What’s the reason for most deficiencies? Students are not turning in their assignments. Parents, your children are not turning in their work! Check Edline.net. Check your child’s planner. There are important messages and information for you from your child’s teachers. Your immediate attention is needed now! Every Friday prior to the Winter Break is a Furlough Friday. In the month of December, there are only ten school days. Your children have a three-day weekend each week and need to use their time away from school responsibly. They need to complete assignments and utilize the available websites for additional practice in reading, writing and basic math skills — TeenBiz, MyAccess, Cognitive Tutor, and Math Whizz.

Teachers have given their students work periods in which to complete and turn in missing assignments. The pressure is on. The end of the quarter is just around the corner. Will your child earn a passing grade in his/her classes? Half of the year is coming to an end.

School supplies... students need to bring a basic calculator to school. The students need calculators for their daily work.

There will be a Chorus Concert on Dec. 10. It will begin promptly at 6 p.m. in our school’s cafetorium. Our choir has been practicing after school at least twice a week. (They sound great!) You are invited to join us. It is an event worth attending. Ahhhh, the sweet voices of adolescents. Thank you, Jayme Carlos, for all the time you devote to your students!

Also, the LIS Band will be performing with the Lahainaluna High School Band in a Winter Concert on Sunday, Dec. 13. This event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center. Last year’s joint concert was absolutely wonderful. We are all looking forward to experiencing the awesome sound of our young musicians. It’s exciting...  it’s inspiring...  it brings tears to your eyes with the beautiful melodies brought to life by our students. Please join us. Thank you to Mark Gilmore of LIS and Myron Carlos of Lahainaluna. We appreciate your time and effort in bringing this great performance to the parents and community of Lahaina. IMUA!
