Adopt, Don’t Shop!
Perhaps you heard the news story last week when 150 dogs on Oahu were impounded from a “puppy mill” operation. These purebred dogs were living in deplorable conditions, with the puppies destined to be sold at extravagant prices to unsuspecting pet lovers who might not realize they were supporting cruel and inhumane practices. There are some reputable breeders of purebred dogs in Hawaii, but sadly, many purebreds are obtained from backyard or large-scale breeding operations where profit takes precedence over humane treatment.
So why don’t more people consider a shelter pet? Unfortunately, there is a common misperception that shelter pets are “damaged goods” or problem pets rejected by their owners for bad behavior. On the contrary, many of the animals at our MHS shelter are here due to the owners’ problems, not the pets?. Loss of a job, relocation, illness or many other personal issues might force pet owners to give up wonderful pets.
From exuberant puppies and kittens to older pets in need of a second chance — we have a wide variety of pets and personalities to choose from, as well as friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you find the best pet for your lifestyle. Every adoption comes with over $400 worth of “extras,” including health exams, flea treatment, spay/neuter, behavioral advice and more.
We hear many wonderful stories from people who have adopted shelter pets. Help us spread the word about the deserving pets at the MHS shelter awaiting a forever home. Visit our website or our Facebook page to see some of the loving pets available for adoption today.
